Today Tamron Hall demonstrated how to handle Republican mouthpieces who want to show their behind rather than engage in proper discourse.

I have never embedded a video before so I will simply direct you to Think Progress.

We need more hosts and more of our people to refuse to accept Republican behavior and frames. Changing Republican behavior requires more people refusing to play along.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

It's this, you can right click on this here and make it open in another tab or window:
    http://www.youtube.com/...

Under the video window is an option called "share." Click that, then below it is "embed." Click that and a box will open up with the embedding code already highlighted for you.

Right click in that box and pick "copy" then come back to your diary (you can edit it) and right-click at the location you want to drop the video. Pick "paste" and it will embed correctly for you.

What you have here is the standard media strategy, which is to get on the air, ignore the questions and use your time to get out your talking points, running into a very unusual response. Carney couldn't possibly have anticipated that Hall was going to do what she did.

I like it, but how would we feel if the shoe was on the other foot? I would have preferred that she kept dogging him: "Answer my question. Are you going to answer my question? You're trying to change the subject: is the Romney campaign afraid to answer this question?"

Because she made it personal ("insult me"), it looked like more of a spat between two people than a call-out of the Romney campaign's unwillingness to be honest.

...right out of the gate by going after her as part of the media.  That was dishonesty on his part.  Her response wasn't only appropriate, it was necessary.  And I'm not seeing the value of worrying about what may or may not happen if the hypothetical shoe was on the other hypothetical foot.  Who gives a rats?

      •  Not really. "The media" isn't personal to her. (0+ / 0-)

Maybe thinking about this in a structural context isn't of value to you, but I actually do politics and media strategy for a living. Hall's response is gratifying from a feelgood perspective, but it doesn't actually do much from a journalistic standpoint, and making "insult" the topic instead of "evasiveness" misses both a journalistic and political opportunity.

        •  Here's an example of an alternative. (0+ / 0-)

He goes into his media schpiel. She interrupts, saying, "Actually, the media's job is to ask questions. Your job is to answer them, and you don't get to pick them for us. Now: yes or no..."

If he goes back to his talking points, she returns with, "Isn't this exactly what critics are saying about Mitt Romney and his campaign? That he refuses to be candid and changes his story when it suits him? Why are you avoiding the question?"

That is 1) Actual journalistic interviewing; 2) Gets directly to core issues about the campaign; and 3) Prevents him from continuing his non sequitur song and dance without looking like a dishonest asshole.

MUCH better than "you're insulting me", which seems to be about Hall and Carney, not the Romney campaign, which is the subject at hand.

        •  I do not hold journalist in high regard (0+ / 0-)

My premise is only tangentially related to the discipline. Refusing to accept framing is a practice that is hardly exclusive to media.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I think it is sad that a journalist went on tv and attacked another journalist after accepting an invitation and brief about the topics to be covered. Seizing  upon the insult is beside the point to me.

and the probable reason you no longer think so is because almost no one in the mainstream press actually practices it any more--especially on television.

Hall's justification for cutting Carney off was that he insulted her. That doesn't reflect on the Romney campaign one way or the other, really. Whereas if she had pursued him as I suggested, it is Romney whose image would have been tested. That's all I'm saying: that if she really wanted to get to the topic she was supposedly interviewing about, she should have stayed on target, just as she should have demanded that he stay on targer.
